The international film festival Cinematik is entering its 21st year. This year, from 8 to 13 September 2026, Piešťany will once again transform into a hub for quality cinema, discussions, inspiring encounters, and artistic freedom.
The organisers are preparing a selection of the best from the entire film world and a rich accompanying programme, including concerts, live podcasts, masterclasses and discussions. Of course, there will also be high-quality competition sections such as Meeting Point Europe and Cinematik.doc.
Special focus will be given to new Danish cinema and one of the most significant Danish directors, Nils Malmros, who will personally present several of his films at the festival. Nils Malmros drew inspiration for his work primarily from the French New Wave, especially from the work of François Truffaut.
The director of the award-winning film Speak No Evil – Christian Tafdrup speaks with great admiration of Malmros. In an interview with Letterboxd, he selected Kundskabens træ / Tree of Knowledge (1981) and Skønheden og udyret / Beauty and the Beast (1983), which he considers sensitive portrayals of the transition from childhood to adulthood. „Both are masterful and heartbreaking dramas that I can only recommend. Malmros is able to capture coming-of-age and the transition from childhood to adulthood like no one else,“ Tafdrup stated. The controversial Lars von Trier also commented on Malmros. „Nils Malmros has made some really excellent films. So there are good Danish films, but there are relatively few of them,“ Trier emphasised.
Over 100 film professionals, critics and journalists are accredited for the event annually, with attendance exceeding 20,000 viewers across all cinemas.
You can look forward to 6 days packed with great films, discussions, meetings with creators, and an exceptional festival atmosphere.
See you 8–13 September!
