Other People’s Children

Rebecca Zlotowski

Other People’s Children, premiered as a competition entry at the Venice Film Festival. It captivated audiences with its deeply moving and sharply drawn portrait of a woman’s shifting emotions, stirred by maternal instincts and societal pressure. Rachel (played by the radiant Virginie Efira) is a content forty-year-old teacher who enjoys her life, friends, work, and even her ex-lovers. She toys with the idea of having her own child but doesn’t particularly desire it. The thought entices her, yet it also evokes fears—a genuine dilemma faced by many women her age. When Rachel meets the charming divorcé Ali (Roschdy Zem), she falls in love not only with him but also with his young daughter, Leila… For the section programmer, this is one of the most significant films to have graced the Venice Film Festival in recent years.
