Media Independence in Slovakia Under Pressure – Reality of Today

Cancellation of political debates, interference in news coverage, the growing influence of politicians on public television and radio, and protests in the streets. Media independence in Slovakia has become a key issue in recent months, not only on the domestic scene but also in foreign news. According to a Globsec survey (February–March 2024), up to 51 % of Slovaks think that government measures threaten media independence. The 2024 Media Freedom Report, published by the Berlin-based NGO Union for Civil Liberties for Europe (Liberties), points to growing pressure on public service media and attacks on journalists across the EU.
