Jim Hosking is a British film director living and working in London. He has three feature films to his name. Several projects he has worked on have premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Is this your first time in Slovakia? Do you know any of our local films?
Yes, this is my first time here. Unfortunately, I don't know any of your works. However, I want to get to know them, and that was one of the main reasons why I came to visit!
Festival Cinematik will screen your latest film, Eben and Ivory. Do you remember when you first heard Paul McCartney's song of the same name as your work?
That was around the time I was a young boy. It was a hit on the radio charts in England back then. I think even then, after hearing it, I started to think about racism and racial prejudice. If I hadn't encountered it, perhaps I wouldn't have addressed the topic at all.
Where did the idea for the film we're presenting at the festival come from?
All my ideas come from a mysterious place. How does anyone actually know where thoughts and ideas come from if they are stolen from somewhere or if these ideas are autobiographical? Generally, a stimulus enters my consciousness for some purpose that I don't understand and I find that it doesn't leave my mind until I start seriously considering it.
Do you have any filmmakers that What do you consider to be your inspiration?
I don't think any particular directors inspire me with their specific style. Rather, I'm interested in those who simply „do their own thing.“ I'll mention, for example, Aki Kaurismäki, Roy Andersson, Mike Leigh, or Hong Sang Soo. That list is long.
Are you currently working on any new projects? If so, could you please tell me more?
Yes, I'm working on a film that is a series of erotic nightmares, the antithesis of comedy. I've reached the end of the road. I'm climbing over a gate, and on the other side there's another road. I'll keep walking down it. We'll see.
